Virtual Hall Passes

Hello! That's right-- I'm back.

I took a (much-needed) break from talking about Google Classroom and teaching during COVID, but I'm back and I've got a new guide!

Pictured: Me in this year's yearbook.

Today, I'm going to show you how to create virtual hall passes.

Why do you need a virtual hall pass? Picture this-- Timmy missed his chance to go to the bathroom between class changes and needs to go... badly. You know you need to track who's out of class, but you also don't want to have to deal with sanitizing a sign-out sheet.

Solution: virtual hall passes.

With a virtual hall pass, you can have Timmy pull his OWN phone out, scan the QR code, type his name, and go off to the bathroom without having to stop and do a million things first.

He literally just has to type his name and hit "send."

It's awesome! It's magical! It's the future... and this is how you do it:

First step: Copy this Google Form (click here if you're a HCBE employee or here if you stumbled upon this some other way [or create your own, but why reinvent the wheel?]).

If you use the HCBE link, you may have to change where it says WRHS (unless you're my coworker-- in which case, hi!).

Second step: Download this guide (click the link) and follow the instructions listed on the PDF.

Is it complicated? A little. Does it get easier after you make the first two QR codes? Yep!

Here is what I ended up doing with my QR codes in case you're wondering what this looks like in the classroom:

Ignore my dirty cabinet...

If you have any issues with any of this, let me know and I'll do my best to help out!

Stay healthy and safe,

K. Hanlin
